L'auteur retrace le destin de sa tante Priscilla. Ressortissante britannique, épouse du comte Doynel de La Sausserie, elle est arrêtée pour avoir refusé de remettre son passeport à l'occupant allemand, puis internée au camp de Besançon. A sa libération, sans papiers et sans amis, elle s'installe à Paris où elle doit user de ses charmes pour survivre, quitte à pactiser avec l'ennemi.
